Automation Is a Poor Substitute for Empowerment

My journey into this work did not start with a product roadmap or a pitch deck.

It started at the kitchen table, trying to help my daughter understand AP Calculus. We were both stuck. Frustrated. Then I asked a language model to walk us through it — step by step, not just the answer — and something shifted. She did not just get an answer. She got a window into the thinking behind it. And I watched her posture change. Frustration gave way to curiosity. The problem was the same. Her relationship to it was not.

That moment told me more about what AI should be than a thousand product demos have.

The entire industry keeps confusing "automating tasks" with "improving the human experience." They are not the same thing.

Automation removes you from the process. Empowerment puts you back in it — armed, curious, and more capable than you walked in.

When people talk about AI like it is just a productivity tool, they are thinking too small. The tool that just makes you faster is not worth building. The tool that makes you sharper is.

AI should not collapse the human out of the work. It should elevate the human into the work.

Everything else is just cost reduction dressed up as innovation.
