Thought of the Day
Personalization Is the Point
Most companies are using AI to automate relationships out of existence. The real value is the opposite — using AI to make human-to-human contact more personal, not less.
Most companies are using AI to automate relationships out of existence.
They build chatbots that replace receptionists. They generate templated outreach that replaces handwritten notes. They summarize meetings so humans never have to actually listen to each other. They call it efficiency.
It is efficiency. It is also the slow removal of every reason a customer chose you in the first place.
Here is the counterintuitive move that almost nobody in the AI industry is making: use the tool to make human contact more personal, not less.
Not personalization as a marketing buzzword. Not "Hey {first_name}" in a mass email. That is automation wearing a name tag.
Real personalization is harder. It means using AI to understand your clients better so you can show up more human. It means spending the hour you saved on research actually calling the person. It means knowing what the client cares about before they walk in — not because a model guessed, but because you used the tool to listen better.
There is a difference between an AI that talks to your customer and an AI that helps you talk to your customer. The first one replaces you. The second one makes you impossible to replace.
Personalization is not a feature. It is a philosophy. And most organizations are choosing the wrong one — not because they are bad people, but because automation is easier to measure than connection.
"We reduced response time by 60 percent" fits on a slide. "Our clients feel seen in a way they cannot articulate" does not.
But the second one is why people come back.
The highest use of AI is not to collapse the human out of the relationship. It is to put the human back into it — with better timing, better context, and more attention than they had before.
Personalization is the point. Everything else is a detour with good metrics.
