Thought of the Day
The Discernment Tax
When production becomes cheap, bad judgment gets expensive. The hidden cost of the AI era is not output. It is the growing tax on people who cannot tell what deserves to exist.
Everyone is talking about how cheap production just became.
Write faster. Design faster. Research faster. Respond faster. Publish faster. The machine spits out competent-looking work at a pace that would have required a team not long ago.
And because the output is cheap, people assume the value is compounding.
Sometimes it is. A lot of the time, it is not.
What actually rises in a world like this is the cost of bad selection.
When production was expensive, the friction itself filtered some nonsense out. You did not publish every half-formed thought. You did not launch every decent-enough campaign. You did not flood your own market with interchangeable sludge because doing that used to take real effort.
That friction is gone now. Which means discernment has inherited its job.
This is the part people miss. AI does not just create an output boom. It creates a discernment tax.
Every weak idea you fail to kill becomes noise your audience has to sort through. Every mediocre campaign you ship because it was easy trains the market to ignore you. Every polished but hollow deliverable drains trust a little faster than you can measure.
Cheap production does not remove consequences. It just moves them downstream.
The companies that win next will not be the ones that produce the most. They will be the ones with the judgment to leave most things unpublished, unsent, and unmade.
That takes more than taste. It takes restraint. It takes standards. It takes enough self-respect to disappoint the part of you that wants to confuse motion with progress.
We are entering a market where the expensive mistake is no longer failing to produce. It is failing to discriminate.
In the old economy, friction was the filter.
In this one, you are.
And if you cannot tell what deserves to exist, you will pay for that confusion everywhere: in your brand, in your relationships, in your attention, and eventually in your economics.
That is the discernment tax.
Everyone will be charged. Not everyone will know why.
