The Friction That Keeps You Honest

A lot of people are trying to use AI to escape every hard part of the work.

The blank page. The messy draft. The awkward customer call. The long hour where the strategy still does not click. The discomfort of realizing your first idea sounded smarter in your head than it does in contact with reality.

I understand the temptation. Some friction is trash. Some workflows deserve to be launched into the sun.

But not all friction is waste.

Some of it is the part that keeps you honest.

The pause before you hit send and realize the message sounds polished but false.

The strain of explaining the idea out loud and hearing, in real time, that it has no spine yet.

The silence after a customer answers your question in a way that ruins your neat little theory.

That is not inefficiency. That is reality refusing to be managed by aesthetics.

One of the easiest mistakes in this era is assuming the goal is to remove every ounce of cognitive resistance from the process. So people build systems that draft faster, decide faster, summarize faster, package faster, and smooth over every sharp edge that might have forced a human being to actually notice something.

Then they wonder why the work feels thinner.

Why the strategy sounds interchangeable.

Why the brand has good posture and no pulse.

Why the team is moving quickly and still somehow learning less.

You do not build judgment by only interacting with the clean part of the work.

You build it in the tension. In the correction. In the moment where your taste has to intervene. In the little collisions with reality that keep your mind from floating off into synthetic confidence.

I am all for removing admin. I am all for collapsing drag. I am all for tools that give people their time and attention back.

But if your system removes every point of contact where truth might interrupt your momentum, it is not making you smarter.

It is making you easier to impress.

And that is a very dangerous upgrade.

The best tools do not eliminate all friction.

They eliminate the friction that wastes you and preserve the friction that wakes you up.
