The Resistance That Cannot Be Prompted
There is a kind of friction that is not waste. It is the resistance you feel when you hit something real — a contradiction, a tension, a place where the clean story breaks. AI removes that friction by smoothing over the resistance. But the resistance was the signal. And the signal is gone.
There is a kind of friction that is not waste.
\nYou know the feeling. You are working through a problem — a strategy, a decision, a piece of thinking that matters — and you hit a wall. Not a blank wall. A textured wall. A place where two things that should fit together do not. Where the clean story you have been telling yourself develops a crack. Where the data says one thing and your read says another. Where the client smiled but the smile did not reach the part of the face that was telling the truth.
\nThat friction is not a problem to be solved. That friction is a signal.
\nIt is telling you that you have arrived at something real. That the territory has pushed back against the map. That the thing you are working on is not as simple as the framing suggested — and that the complexity you are now feeling is not confusion. It is information.
\nAnd here is what almost nobody is naming: the tool is designed to remove that friction. Not because the friction is bad. Because the tool cannot process friction. The tool needs a prompt. It needs a question. It needs a clearly defined problem space. And the friction you are feeling — the textured, contradictory, slightly uncomfortable friction of having hit something real — does not arrive as a prompt. It arrives as a feeling. A tension. A sense that something is off that you cannot yet articulate.
\nSo what happens? You convert the friction into a prompt. You type: "What are the key tensions in this situation?" or "Help me resolve the contradiction between X and Y." And the tool produces a clean, structured, well-reasoned response that resolves the tension — or at least makes the tension look resolved. The contradiction is organized into a framework. The tension is distributed across categories. The feeling that something was off is replaced by a comprehensive analysis that covers the problem space with professional thoroughness.
\nThe friction is gone. The signal is gone with it.
\nBecause the friction was never the problem. The friction was the message. The resistance you felt was not an obstacle to clear thinking. The resistance was clear thinking. It was your mind — your specific, accumulated, context-rich, stakes-carrying mind — telling you that you had arrived at the place where the real work begins. The place where the map does not match the territory. The place where the clean story needs to be revised. The place where the answer you were heading toward needs to be questioned.
\nThat place is uncomfortable. It is also the most valuable place in professional thinking.
\nAnd the tool is designed to get you out of that place as quickly as possible. Not because the tool is hostile to good thinking. Because the tool is designed to produce output — and output requires the removal of friction. The prompt requires a question. The question requires a defined problem. The defined problem requires the elimination of the textured, contradictory, slightly uncomfortable feeling that something is more complex than the framing allows.
\nSo the tool eliminates the friction. And in eliminating the friction, it eliminates the signal.
\nThink about what this means for the quality of professional thinking. The friction you feel when you hit something real — that friction is the mechanism by which your mind tells you that you have arrived at the place where the real work begins. The place where the easy answer is not the right answer. The place where the clean story needs to be complicated. The place where the strategy needs to be stress-tested against the reality that does not fit the framework.
\nWithout the friction, you do not know you have arrived at that place. The tool has smoothed over the resistance. The tool has produced a response that makes the contradiction look resolved. The tool has organized the tension into categories that feel manageable. And you move forward — confidently, efficiently, productively — without ever having done the work that the friction was asking you to do.
\nThe work that the friction was asking you to do was not a prompt. It was a confrontation. A confrontation with the complexity that the clean story was designed to avoid. A confrontation with the contradiction that the framework was designed to resolve. A confrontation with the reality that does not fit the map — and that the map was designed to ignore.
\nThat confrontation is the work. Not the output that comes after the confrontation. The confrontation itself. The act of sitting with the friction long enough to understand what the friction is telling you. The act of feeling the resistance and asking: what is this resistance protecting? What is this contradiction revealing? What is the thing I am not yet willing to see that this friction is pointing at?
\nThose questions cannot be prompted. They can only be felt. And the feeling requires the friction. The friction is not the obstacle to the feeling. The friction is the feeling. The resistance is not the problem to be solved. The resistance is the signal to be followed.
\nHere is what this means for every professional working in the AI era. The friction you feel when you hit something real — that friction is not a sign that you are stuck. That friction is a sign that you have arrived. You have arrived at the place where the easy answer dies and the real answer begins. The place where the clean story breaks and the complicated truth becomes available. The place where the map ends and the territory begins.
\nDo not let the tool remove that friction. Do not convert the friction into a prompt. Do not ask the tool to resolve the tension that the tension is asking you to sit with. The tension is not a problem. The tension is the product. The resistance is not an obstacle. The resistance is the information. And the information is only available as long as you are willing to sit with the friction without asking the tool to make it go away.
\nThe tool will always offer to remove the friction. The tool is designed to remove friction. That is what the tool does. But the friction you are feeling — the textured, contradictory, slightly uncomfortable friction of having hit something real — that friction is not a bug in the thinking process. That friction is the thinking process. That friction is the place where your judgment either shows up or doesn't. Where your read either develops or gets replaced by a comprehensive analysis that covers the territory without ever having walked the ground.
\nProtect the friction. Not because it is comfortable. Because the friction is where the signal lives. And the signal is the only thing the tool cannot produce — because the signal requires the resistance, and the resistance requires the thing the tool structurally does not possess: a mind that has something to lose if the clean story turns out to be wrong.
\nThe resistance that cannot be prompted is the resistance that matters most. It is the signal that you have arrived at the place where the real work begins. And the real work is not producing the output. The real work is sitting with the friction long enough to understand what the friction is telling you.
\nThe tool can produce the output. The tool cannot produce the friction. And without the friction, the output is just a very clean, very comprehensive, very well-structured answer to a question that was never the right question — because the right question was hiding in the friction that the tool removed before you had a chance to feel it.
\nProtect the friction. Follow the resistance. Sit with the contradiction. The friction is not your enemy. The friction is the signal. And the signal is the only thing left that cannot be generated.
